Social Bookmarking

It's always a good idea to bookmark websites that you use frequently, however, if you bookmark using the browser on your computer, you won't have access to your bookmarks when you're away from your computer. You will also have to move your bookmarks when you get a new computer. Social bookmarking solves both those problems, and can give you a kind of research assistant as well.

CommonCraft on Social Bookmarking

Tagging

Tagging - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_(metadata) - is a central organizing principle on the Web, and is central to del.icio.us. By adding personally-relevant labels to bookmarks, or similarly photos on on online photo-sharing sites, it is easy to find the specific site, or photo, you want. Here's part of my del.icio.us tag cloud -

Notice that some words are bigger and darker; this shows that these tags have more websites saved using them. One of the great features of tgging is that you can apply several tags to one site, and thus have several ways to remember how to get to the site.

del.icio.us Buttons

It's easy to use del.icio.us, just add the icons to the navigation toolbar:

  • The icon pointed to by the left arrow opens my bookmarks directly
  • The icon in the middle is what I click on to save a site; it opens a saving window
  • The icon on the right opens my del.icio.us account

When you click on the "Tag" button, a window opens up:

Notice the field for the tags you choose; I often add a course code here if it's relevant to a course I teach.  Notice also my account name, shiftingsemiosis, and that I can keep a bookmark private - I don't have to share everything! Feel free to browse my tags at http://delicious.com/shiftingsemiosis?settagview=cloud and/or be rally social and become part of my network - http://delicious.com/network/shiftingsemiosis

To get your own del.icio.us buttons -

So that's how to save socially, how to use the social bookmarking tool, del.icio.us. There are other social bookmarking tools, but del.icio.us is one of the most popular.
